Highways Maui District kicked off the new year with a visit to Waihe‘e Elementary’s 5th graders on January 15th and 16th, bringing stormwater science to life for 85 students. With hands-on demonstrations using the EnviroScape and Stormdrain models, we showed how stormwater carries everything in its path—trash, chemicals, and other pollutants—straight to the ocean.
Students got an eye-opening look at the hidden connections between their neighborhoods and Maui’s waterways. More importantly, they discovered how small actions—like keeping storm drains clear and reducing pollution—can help protect the island’s environment.
Huge thanks to Waihe‘e Elementary for having us! It was great to see students thinking critically about how they can make a difference.
