We are thrilled to share the story of the Kuihelani Sound Wall Mural: Oneloa & Keone’o’io, a vibrant transformation of public infrastructure into a community masterpiece. Located in Kahului, Maui, this nearly two-thirds-of-a-mile stretch of highway is no longer just asphalt and signage; it is now a sprawling canvas of cultural pride and environmental storytelling.
Bridging Generations Through Art
Initiated by the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) Highways Maui District, the project was a deep collaboration with Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Youth Services and professional Maui artists Matt Agcolicol and Bailey Onaga.
The mural’s design—featuring a powerful ocean swell, the Pu’u Ola’i cinder cone, and delicate maiapilo blossoms—was directly inspired by the creative brainstorming and sketches of local students. This wasn’t just a project for the youth; it was created by and with them, giving them a tangible stake in their community.
A Lasting Impact
Completed between June and August 2025, the mural has received widespread recognition from outlets like Maui Now and Hawaii News Now. It stands today as a permanent visual legacy of youth creativity and environmental resilience in the heart of Maui.
