Announcing the 2025 Dash for Trash Champion…
Kamehameha Schools Maui! 🏆🌺

This winning team organized two cleanups along Kula Highway as part of an Environmental Science class project through the Adopt-A-Highway program. Their dedication to mālama ʻāina and hands-on learning is a true reflection of the KSM spirit — using classroom lessons to care for the land and their community. 💪🌿

“There was a lot more trash than we thought there was going to be,” said junior Nawea Cook. “But it was really fun and satisfying to do the work and see all the things we collected.”

With help from the KSM PTSO and nearly 30 years in the program, this team continues to show what mālama ʻāina looks like in action.

Kula Highway is looking better because of you — mahalo nui for your leadership and hard work!

Ever seen these words near storm drains? They’re not just paint and cool medallions—they’re protection.

🌿 Protect our water by following these everyday Best Management Practices (BMPs):
✅ Pick up after your pets – Pet waste contains harmful bacteria that can wash into streams.
✅ Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly – Apply only what you need, and never before heavy rain.
✅ Fix oil and fluid leaks from your car and never hose spills into the street.
✅ Wash your car on the grass or at a commercial car wash to prevent soapy water from entering the drain.
✅ Sweep, don’t hose driveways, sidewalks, and gutters.
✅ Keep green waste and trash out of storm drains – compost yard clippings and properly dispose of litter.

Highways Maui District is proud to recognize Heart of Aloha Church on Molokai as our Quarter 4 2024 recipient of the No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award. This award celebrates their remarkable dedication and contributions to the Adopt-A-Highway program. Led by Senior Pastor Cameron Hiro, the church has been a part of the Adopt-A-Highway program since 2019, cleaning their two-mile stretch of Kalae Highway (mile markers 0–2).

Pastor Hiro humbly shared, “It’s not about recognition but about kuleana. We do what we can.”

We’re grateful for their dedication and the commitment since joining the program. Congratulations, Heart of Aloha Church, and mahalo for your service to Molokai!

🐾 Scoop the Poop! Pet waste left behind can wash into storm drains during rain, polluting our waterways with harmful bacteria. Be a responsible pet owner and always pick up after your dog.

💧 Stick to the Trails. Walking on designated paths helps prevent soil erosion and protects plants that naturally filter stormwater.

🌱 Trash the Trash. Pack out all litter, including snack wrappers or dog waste bags, to keep parks clean and water sources safe.

Keep your holidays green! 🎄 Avoid waste that clogs drains and pollutes stormwater:
Recycle wrapping paper.
Dispose of grease properly.

Kāwelu: Drought tolerant and great for filling in spaces for erosion control or weed suppression. It thrives in exposed, full sun, windy habitats, and will also be happy at the foot of your natives in your home landscape.
Palapalai: A beautiful lacy fern used in lei. It grows best in moist mesic zones.
Maile: A vine known for it’s fragrant leaves in lei. Maile is a vine that does best in mesic conditions.

The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Maui District, is pleased to recognize and celebrate three Marriott properties in Wailea for receiving the No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award.

🏆 This award highlights their outstanding contributions to the Adopt-A-Highway program, and we applaud their valuable service. 🙌

The Wailea Beach Resort, Residence Inn, and AC Hotel in Wailea have been working together for several years to care for a section of Piilani Highway between mileposts 5.5 and 7.5, organizing quarterly cleanup events and coordinating with team members across their properties.

Since 2018, employees of the three properties have devoted hundreds of volunteer hours to Maui’s Adopt-A-Highway public service program and collectively removed more than 450 bags of trash. 🗑️

Stay Prepared: Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishaps.
Handle with Care: Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
Proper Disposal: After fireworks finish burning, douse the devices with plenty of water from a bucket or hose. Place them in a trash bag, and then into your trash can. Never leave fireworks in your driveway or wash them into a storm drain where they can be carried to the ocean in stormwater.

Never blow or wash green waste into the street or storm drain inlets. Using mulch helps retain moisture, prevents erosion, and reduces the need for excess irrigation.
🔧 Equipment Fueling and Maintenance: Handle fuels like gasoline, diesel, oil, and grease with care to avoid spills. Use funnels or spouts when fueling equipment. Keep machinery well-maintained to prevent leaks and increase fuel efficiency, reducing the risk of pollutants entering our waterways.
