Kamali’i Elementary School 2nd Grade Presentations

Highways Maui District had so much fun visiting the 2nd graders at Kamali‘i Elementary School on February 26th! We connected with over 50 students through hands-on activities that showed how rainwater flows through Maui and how pollution can sneak into our ocean.

With the EnviroScape and Stormdrain models, students got to see how trash and other pollutants travel with stormwater. They also learned easy ways to help keep our water clean, like throwing away litter and making sure only rain goes down the drain!

Mahalo to Kamali‘i Elementary for having us—we loved exploring how small actions can help protect Maui’s waters!

Makawao Elementary 3rd Grade Presentations

Highways Maui District had a blast visiting the 3rd graders at Makawao Elementary School on February 20th! We connected with over 75 students through hands-on presentations about stormwater runoff and pollution, bringing the topic to life with interactive models like the EnviroScape and Stormdrain models.

Students got a close-up look at how stormwater travels through Maui’s environment—and how pollution can hitch a ride straight to the ocean. They also discovered simple yet powerful ways to protect water quality, from picking up litter to keeping chemicals out of storm drains.

A big mahalo to Makawao Elementary for welcoming us—we enjoyed showing how small actions can make a big splash for Maui’s waters!

HDOT Highways Maui District at the 2025 Pacific Water Conference

HDOT Highways Maui District participated in this year’s Pacific Water Conference, joining water resource professionals, engineers, and environmental experts to discuss key issues affecting Hawai’i’s waterways and infrastructure. The conference, held in Honolulu, provided an opportunity to share insights and solutions for water management challenges across the islands.

Pre-Conference Presentation: Stormwater Management & Data Analysis

On February 4th, Ty Fukuroku, HDOT Maui District Engineer, spoke at the Pre-Conference about HDOT’s stormwater management program and the role of data management in improving environmental protection efforts. His presentation covered how HDOT tracks and evaluates stormwater mitigation strategies, and he opened the floor for discussion on ways to better measure effectiveness. As stormwater regulations evolve, refining data collection and assessment methods is key to ensuring long-term success in pollution prevention.

Conference Presentation: Lahaina Wildfire Stormwater Mitigation Response

On February 6th, our HDOT Engineering team and consultants delivered a presentation on the Lahaina Wildfire Stormwater Mitigation Response. The discussion focused on the unique challenges of post-fire stormwater management, including erosion control, sediment transport, and protecting coastal waters in West Maui. The team shared insights on emergency response actions and long-term strategies aimed at reducing stormwater pollution following the devastating August 2023 wildfire.

As stormwater management continues to be a priority, HDOT remains committed to implementing innovative and effective solutions to protect Maui’s environment. Events like the Pacific Water Conference provide valuable opportunities to collaborate with experts and enhance our approach to sustainable water management.
