Earth Night at The Maui Ocean Center 2025

Highways Maui District brought the storm again—stormwater, that is! We joined Maui Ocean Center’s annual Earth Night event with our interactive stormwater management booth, reaching over 250 attendees this year. The evening featured hands-on educational activities from community partners across the island. Our team used the Stormwater Model to show how runoff travels through our neighborhoods and into the ocean, sparking great conversations about ways we can all help protect Maui’s environment.

Mahalo to Maui Ocean Center for hosting this meaningful event and for including us in the celebration!

Kahului Elementary School 4th Grade Presentations

Highways Maui District had a great time with the 4th graders at Kahului Elementary School on April 21st and 22nd for some fun Earth Day stormwater presentations! We connected with 111 students through hands-on activities that helped show how rainwater moves across Maui and how pollution can make its way into the ocean.

Using the EnviroScape and Stormdrain models, students got a close-up look at how trash and other pollutants can travel with stormwater. They also learned simple ways they can help keep our waters clean—like picking up litter and making sure only rain goes down the drain.

Mahalo to Kahului Elementary for having us! We loved celebrating Earth Day by exploring how small everyday actions can help protect Maui’s environment.

Ho’okele Elementary School Engineering Night

On April 17th, the Maui Highways team headed to Ho‘okele Elementary School to take part in this year’s Engineering Night—and we brought along one of our favorite hands-on activities! Using our AASHTO STEM Kits, we invited students to explore the difference between permeable and impermeable surfaces by building and testing mini models.

After observing how water moves through each type of surface, students were challenged to think like engineers and come up with ways to improve water flow on hard surfaces.

Using materials like rocks, sponges, and pipe cleaners, they got to work designing and building their own stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) to help mimic natural drainage and reduce runoff. From mini bioswales to sponge-filter hybrids, their creativity was on full display!

It was a fun and meaningful way to introduce real-world engineering concepts and spark conversations about how stormwater is managed in our communities. Big mahalo to Ho‘okele Elementary School for welcoming us again—we always enjoy spending time with these future engineers!
