Q3 2025 No Ka Oi Highway Hui Recipient: Maui District Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF)

This quarter, we’re proud to recognize the dedicated team at Maui District Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) for their continued commitment to protecting both our highways and our community.

Maui ARFF first joined the Adopt-A-Highway Program in 2015 and returned in 2025 with renewed energy. They adopt the stretch from milepost 0–2 on Route 37, Haleakalā Highway, one of the island’s busiest and dirtiest segments. The group organizes large cleanups that bring together firefighters, families, and friends, making each event a community effort.

When asked what sparked their interest in Adopt-A-Highway, Lieutenant Kealoha Kramer explained that it started with noticing the old highway sign and seeing how much trash had accumulated. Encouragement from family and coworkers helped get the program back on track, and the team now welcomes volunteers from other organizations, turning cleanups into collaborative community events.

This quarter, we want to give extra thanks to our firefighters. From emergency response at Kahului Airport to weekend highway cleanups, the crew exemplifies public service. Their work goes beyond keeping the roadway clean; it’s about showing the community that they are present and invested in making Maui a safer and more welcoming place.

In 2025 alone, Maui ARFF and their volunteers have removed nearly 100 bags of trash from this stretch of highway. Lieutenant Kealoha Kramer reflected on the dedication of his team: “Work will always be there, but taking your time to volunteer out of the goodness of your heart… you can do something very small but make the biggest difference.”

Over the years, their cleanups have uncovered everything from stray recyclables to unexpected treasures, making the work meaningful and memorable. The group emphasizes involving families and teens, highlighting that even a small contribution can make a big impact. The visible support from passing motorists—horns honking and waves of appreciation—reinforces the importance of their efforts.

Mahalo to Lieutenant Kealoha Kramer and the entire Maui ARFF team for leading with heart and keeping our highways—and our community—No Ka Oi.

Kamali’i Elementary School 2nd Grade Presentations

Highways Maui District had a blast visiting the 2nd graders at Kamaliʻi Elementary on September 24! We shared stormwater science through fun, hands-on activities that showed how rainwater moves across Maui and how trash and pollution can end up in the ocean.

With the EnviroScape and Stormdrain models, students saw how stormwater can carry everything in its path. They also learned simple ways to help protect Maui—like keeping drains clear, picking up litter, and remembering that only rain should go down the drain.

A big mahalo to Kamaliʻi Elementary for having us! We loved seeing students learning and sharing ideas about how they can help care for our island.
