This quarter, we’re happy to recognize the Rotary Club of Maui for the care they’ve been showing their Adopt-A-Highway segment on Kula Highway.
The Rotary Club of Maui joined the program in 2024, adopting milepost 16–18 along Route 37 in Keōkea, an area that holds special meaning for many of their members. Captain Michael Lilly shared that caring for this stretch of road felt like a natural fit because it is part of the community they live in and care about.
Cleanups have become a rewarding routine for the group. Seeing full bags at the end of a cleanup and watching the roadside transform makes the effort worthwhile every time. As Heather Mueller put it, “It’s so nice to see the beauty of the land, and then when you realize you’ve cleaned up all this junk, the beauty just stands out.”
Service is central to Rotary, and Adopt-A-Highway fits easily into the club’s broader mission. With a strong focus on giving locally and environmental stewardship throughout the year, highway cleanups have become a meaningful way for members to contribute close to home.

Although the Rotary Club of Maui is a smaller group, their impact goes well beyond their numbers. Many volunteers live nearby and treat the highway like part of their ʻohana, and neighbors often join in to help. Working in teams, sharing conversation, and receiving waves and honks from passing drivers makes each cleanup feel like a shared community effort.
Through consistency, teamwork, and care for their surroundings, the Rotary Club of Maui continues to show how local action can make a visible difference, one cleanup at a time.
