Exploring Careers with HDOT at Construction Career Days

On Friday, October 24th, HDOT Highways Maui District participated in Construction Career Days, giving high school students a closer look at careers in transportation and construction.

HDOT representatives shared information about what it’s like to work in highway construction, civil engineering, and other transportation-related fields. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, learn about different career paths, and understand how HDOT helps keep Maui’s roads and infrastructure safe and efficient.

The event was a great way for students to explore the variety of jobs in the transportation industry and consider future careers in engineering, construction, and public service. It was inspiring to see students engaged and curious about the important work that keeps Maui moving.

Iao Intermediate Students Take on Bridge Building!

On October 23rd, HDOT Highways Maui District partnered with STEMWorks to host a 90-minute Bridge Builder demonstration at Iao Intermediate School using the AASHTO Bridge Builder Module.

Twenty students took part in the hands-on session, learning about engineering and bridge design in a fun and interactive way. They got to plan, design, and test their own bridge ideas while working together and solving problems.

The activity gave students a real taste of STEM and engineering careers, helping them think like engineers and build their skills, one bridge at a time!

Building Bridges with AASHTO and STEMworks

In partnership with AASHTO and STEMworks, HDOT Highways Maui District hosted a statewide Bridge Builder Training on October 14th. Five teachers from across the state participated in the session, where they were introduced to our AASHTO Bridge Building Module—a hands-on curriculum that engages students in engineering and bridge design concepts.

During the training, educators learned practical strategies for guiding their students through the bridge-building process, from planning and design to testing and problem-solving. The session emphasized teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity, giving teachers the tools to make engineering concepts approachable and engaging in the classroom.

This training was held in preparation for the upcoming Bridge Builder Competition with STEMworks, where students will put their newly learned skills to the test. We’re excited to see how these educators will inspire their students to think like engineers, tackle design challenges, and experience the satisfaction of building bridges that actually work.
